So, I've been thinking recently about quitting watching the show....that is, quitting watching it on tv. I stopped watching syndication ages ago, but now I'm finding it harder and harder to actually sit through the show and specifically the nine goddamn minutes of commercials that Fox crams into every showing, and having just gotten a dvd recorder as a gift, I think I can safely say that I might be through watching any episodes of the show on broadcast period. In the past couple years in particular, I've noticed that it's getting really hard to sit through the commercials, and though watching episodes through recordings doesn't drastically affect my opinion of them or anything (episodes I've watched this season without commercials have ranged from the very good "Monkey Suit" to the dreadful "Wettest Stories Ever Told"), I've found that it's just....easier to watch them that way lately. I don't feel as distracted and detached from the show.
Am I alone on this, though? Anyone else finding it harder to sit through the show as a result of commercials? The weird thing is, it's actually the hardest example....maybe it's just because The Simpsons has a narrative in each show and the commercials distract too much from it, but I actually don't find it as hard to watch other shows (namely Comedy Central, the only other channel I watch regularly) as I do The Simpsons lately. Anyone else think the commercials themselves might be really hurting the show in some way?
And for the record, this thread is NOT about the issue of commercials making it harder to fit the story in...this is purely from the standpoint of the person watching, not how it affects the production of the show.
