This page displays our collection of Simpsons imagery in ASCII format. ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) art, which is also used to refer to text art in general, consists of pictures pieced together from the 95 printable (from a total of 128) characters defined by the ASCII Standard from 1963 and ASCII compliant character sets. One of the most popular forms of ASCII art is something that you may use on a daily basis: the smiley. :-)
One of the main reasons ASCII art was born was because early printers often lacked graphics ability and thus characters were used in place of graphics. ASCII art is useful to this day since many e-mail programs do not display graphics without utilizing another program. When using a fixed-width font, displaying ASCII artwork instead of an image file assures you that you'll have a picture included with your e-mail.
