One of the main reasons ASCII art was born was because early printers often lacked graphics ability and thus characters were used in place of graphics. ASCII art is useful to this day since many e-mail programs do not display graphics without utilizing another program. When using a fixed-width font, displaying ASCII artwork instead of an image file assures you that you'll have a picture included with your e-mail.
