So... my feelings about Cartoon Network over the last five years.

I feel like most of it is that Cartoon Network is a network that markets itself to children (except for Adult Swim), and that people just tend to grow out of networks like that. Now, granted, there are plenty of kids shows that have jokes that older people pick up on (like Tiny Toons was doing in the 90s). But nevertheless, when the Cartoon Network suits are coming up with their shows, their main demographic in mind are kids.

Personally, I was really into Cartoon Network back during the heyday of Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, 2 Stupid Dogs, and Johnny Bravo... Those were the introduction shows that shaped my opinion of the network. But then they started coming out with shows like "Ed Edd n Eddy" or "Courage the Cowardly Dog", and suddenly I didn't find those shows very interesting. This was only 2-3 years later, but I was also around 14 or 15 years old by then. There probably isn't anything wrong with Ed Edd n Eddy, but my tastes and preferences changed too much to give it a chance.

And I don't think it's really a bad thing because I feel like there has to reach a point where you move onto other stuff. I mean, watching your old stuff is fine and dandy for pure nostalgia, but there's usually that point where you lose the appeal of the new shows they crank out. So I don't really think it's really the new shows' faults.

(The same thing happened for me with Nickelodeon. Loved everything from the early days of Doug, Rocko, and Rugrats all the way up to The Angry Beavers and Hey Arnold. But then I suddenly think Rocket Power and Spongebob are stupid. I dunno, if I were born 5 years later, I might've liked both shows?)

Only saw a couple of the early episodes, but it really didn't do much for me. Maybe it was brilliant? I dunno.

Again, I'm probably going to blame me being a freshman in high school by then. Besides, I was too busy watching TRL and stuff like that. :ashamed:

Courage was a really acquired taste, but certain episodes were amazing. Especially the one where it flashes back to his parents, and the one with the giant space squid. The whole show is trippy as hell to the point of surrealism overkill but it did have its moments for me. Because of that though I'm surprised it lasted even as long as it did.

I saw the begining of the end when they had to justify putting "Saved By The Bell" reruns on... its been down hill ever since

I've always viewed Courage the same way as Pinky and the Brain, a show that has a good premise and good writing, but is hard to watch en masse. I can watch an episode or two, but after that I just find it boring.

Ed, Edd, N Eddy was kickass though, especially seasons two through four. Hardly any bad episodes in those seasons.

The original short was hilarious, but the series' suckage was probably inevitable. By definition (at least if the series was going to be true to the original concept from the short), every single short would have to somehow revolve around the old couple being put in danger by another supernatural...thing, and then the dog having to somehow stop that thing while being cowardly about it. In other words, it HAD to be formulaic.

i liked courage a lot as a kid but watching some episodes recently it just doesn't entertain me nearly as much.

that king ramses' episode was so scary when i was younger, though. that's probably the scariest episode

The guy who did Squirrel Boy was one of my teachers when I went to community college...unfortunately, Everett Peck did not like me (let's just say he prefers bimbos instead of intelligent women).

I used to watch CN BEFORE they had Boomerang 'cuz they showed Joise and the Pussycats, Banana Splits and Wacky Races...all cartoons I watched as a kid.

Now I only watch Adult Swim...Metalocalypse and Robot Chicken.

Well, the reason why I detest "Squirrel Boy" was that the main character was presented as a horrible creature that had no redeeming qualities. The episode where he tried his "haggling prowness" (essentially he ALWAYS offered more than what something was worth) felt like he was a forced-idea creature that needed to be shot and eaten by Cousin Eddie.

Another show during that time period was Andre "3000" Benjamin's show "Class of 3000". My issue with that program lied in the fact that it didn't try at all to do anything besides the music videos (which were more miss than hit).

As for "Courage the Cowardly Dog", I actually enjoy that program. It's not exactly something to watch a marathon of, but I do like the effort that was put into it, especially the episode featuring the hunchbacked person who wouldn't be offered a place to stay during a thunderstorm simply because of the way he looked (as one person put it bluntly).

And, of course, the legendary King Ramses, which really is an episode to watch on Halloween.

"Oh, come on."

I will also admit that I am a "Codename: Kids Next Door" fan. You'd have to shut your mind off to watch most episodes, but I do get a kick out of it. Besides, few people realize that J.R. Toliken himself concieved the idea of using the numerical term "eleventy", although his intent was way different than the children on the show.

That said, all I watch now is adult swim's Metalpocalypse and Robot Chicken, along with Futurama repeats back when they were aired.

cartoon network has a bunch of good shows right now - adventure time, regular show, mad, batman, that new scooby doo show (and that upcoming ben jones show looks like a trip), and that star wars show is semi tolerable. I'd say it's a new golden era

who cares if they have some dumb live-action shows, just don't watch 'em

For anybody who cares, the Looney Tunes return to CN for an undetermined amount of time starting this Monday, March 14. The shorts will air for a half-hour everyday at 6AM ET, and for a full hour on weekdays at 12 noon ET. It's presumed that this is some sort of promotion for the premier of The Looney Tunes Show, a new show starring the characters that debuts in May.

i watch more adult swim than i do cartoon network. a lot of the stuff i watch on cartoon network is stuff i used to watch as a kid, like courage the cowardly dog, sometimes ed, edd n eddy, or grim adventures of billy and mandy, or kids next door. i haven't watched any of the newer stuff, except a couple episodes of "Mad", which were fairly entertaining.

on adult swim i watch king of the hill, sometimes american dad, robot chicken, family guy, and i've seen aqua teen hunger force and the boondocks a few times. I've only seen Venture Brothers once, and i was really tired and only had the tv on because i was at a friend's house, who only sleeps when the tv is on, so i wasn't paying attention, but i hear good things about it, so i might watch it.

More props for Adventure Time. I've only managed to watch it once on CN over here (on DSTV in Africa, schedule and air dates are very different for all shows), but it's a special kind of funny. Pendleton Ward, it's creator, is pretty young too, and cites The Simpsons and David Lynch as some of his influences, although I'm pretty sure the guy lives on shrooms.

I tune in for Batman and the occasional Ben 10 episode. Not sure when Clone Wars is coming back, but I'll watch that too.

Where to start?...

Cartoon Network "Jumped the Shark" when they dumped Looney Tunes off their schedule. Now it's on again for probably a limited time, but once that happened in 2004/2005...I got Boomerang because they showed Looney Tunes as well, I also have taped all of the Loopy de Loop cartoons on there. All 48 Cartoons!

Now Cartoon Network should just be called The Children's Network since they show Live-Action shows and have only a limited amount of Cartoons! I think this is what should happen!...

Cartoon Network-Have it become "The Children's Network" and have it compete Nickelodeon and The "Disney" Channel.

Boomerang-Dump the newer cartoons and have it be only cartoons from the 30's to the early 90's!

And make new Stations Called...

Cartoon Cartoons Network-You may have enough Cartoon Cartoons to have a station!

Adult Swim-Same here and you could probably have shows such as "Mystery Science Theater 3000" on there!

Good idea, but then again really wouldn't work out in a financial standpoint, nor would it possible to launch these new channels without working out deals to carry these stations (since Turner has no useless left over networks that nobody would care about if it was gone.)

While I hate it when a channel drifts away from it's initial purpose, there is no way to change their minds nor is their way to get around the solution by creating new channels. Sure, we'd like these channels back but everything we think of are just pipe dreams.

plus, why would Cartoon Network force itself into a certain limited demographic by renaming themselves "The Children's Network"? I think the switch from Cartoon Network to just being called CN was their way of saying "yeah, we're gonna show more than just cartoons now"

Yeah, just watch Boomerang. They might as well name it the Hanna-Barbera Network, 90% of it's lineup is their output.

The only thing from the original Cartoon Network I would like to see on the current one is the screening of more classic cartoons, besides the usual Tom and Jerry. I personally think it'd be awesome if they brought back the Acme Hour idea, mix Looney Tunes with MGMs and Popeyes and whatever else they hold the rights to, and air it for and hour or two each day. Aside from cutting back on the Johnny Test reruns(God forbid), it really wouldn't be to much trouble for them to do.

It would be great if they did, that was one of the things I enjoyed watching as a kid. I can't really pass much judgement on the current cartoons shown on CN now because I've only seen tiny bits of pieces of them. The only time I do turn to CN is to watch [adult swim].

I don't watch the kids' stuff on Cartoon Network hardly at all anymore, but I agree with the sentiment that Adult Swim kinda sucks nowadays. Robot Chicken, ATHF/AUPS1 and Squidbillies are hilarious, but things like NTSF:SD:SUV and Children's Hospital are terrible.
