Simpsons: For Kids or Adults?

Adult but, it definitely is one of the least edgy shows in that category.

If they do push it to a TV-14 it's usually a soft one.

Never see Simpsons use all of the rating symbols after the TV-14/PG
Family Guy almost always uses all of the DLSV symbols.

I think the only non-THOH episodes rated TV-14 DLSV are 'Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes', 'Wedding for Disaster', '500 Keys', 'The Wayz We Were' and 'A Serious Flanders'.

Groening was confident that he can make his cartoon family a favorite well beyond the kiddie set. ''`The Simpsons` is not written for kids; it`s written for adults,'' he said.
Not in contrast to what came around afterwards. The show is more like a show that would be on say Teen Nick or something.

Also, one of the current show runners sums up the audience here as being a family show:

It seems to be an adult show, but it was occasionally marketed towards children (Happy Meal toys). Honestly I'm not sure, a “tame" pg rated adult show that's safe for children I'm guessing.

I guess you're right. I mean this is the same show that had a cameo on a show for PRE-SCHOOL children:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, and anyone can refer to the previous posts on this thread, but it is in fact a Family show as it has things for all ages, not just specific to a certain age range.

Although as mentioned by another user, the show was trying to be edgy like Family Guy from around Seasons 14-20ish up until the the HD era began, although the edginess kind of started with Natural born Kissers tbh. The show is still edgy from time to time since the start of the HD era, but not like in every episode over the course of those Seasons mentioned where it was trying risky humor like Family Guy like with constant sex stuff rubbed in your face, drug references and jokes up the ass, and attempted racial jokes which is screaming a wannabe Family Guy. But even in the so called "risky" or "edgy" era, all that stuff honestly is all immature that honestly only 10 year old would laugh at such as for example in one episode Kent Brockman saying "How can I prove we're live? Penis."

It really depends on the era. I think it was uniquely adult in the cartoon world at the time in the classic era.

Yep, I couldn't find a video but Brian and Stewie featured in a Target ad for the 2015 Peanuts movie.

I was being a tiny bit misleading for this one but as a promotion for Ice Age 2, FOX got Sid to announce their Sunday night programming which included Family Guy. I didn't think the day of hearing Sid say "sex" would ever come. I also believe there is a Simpsons and Malcom in the Middle one:

In one episode Kent Brockman says "How can I prove we're live? Penis."
To be fair, I found that quite funny.

Kent Brockman saying "How can I prove we're live? Penis."
I hated the joke. It gets worse knowing the joke had the potential to be funnier, as there were some users that suggested even funnier alternative ideas like if the word Kent said either got bleeped, or instead of him saying penis, he could instead say: "My news director's a jackass!". See how funny those jokes sound? And yet they had to say penis because edgy sex humor = funny.

For children, adults, and even pets... And in general, those who are pinching to show it to children, lol, let them see real life right away.

Sometimes I try to create something of my own, whether it's a cartoon or a fairy tale, but I use bazoocam videos for the best video work, and I'm having a good time.

I remember being with my dad when an ad for The Simpsons Movie played on tv. The voiceover said "Rated PG-13". My dad said "What, do they show Homer naked?" :ac:

Everything the movie did to seem more "adult" was so cringey. Otto smokes from a bong! Marge says "goddamn"!

Related, Matt G is really letting his freak flag fly on Netflix by having the characters say "goddamn" 20 times an episode

In conclusion, Simpsons fandom is a spectrum

I mean they did show Bart's weenie and that is pretty gross in a way. It reminds me of the time I heard one guy post about how some child was dragged out of the theatre at that time, lemme find the post....

Edit: I found it. https://forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/662301/is-the-simpsons-a-kids-program/p2
It is the 30th post.

I think People Magazine listed Bart hanging dong as one of their "Top 10 Most Awesome
Moments that Defined Summer 2007"

What next? Homer using beads?
Imagine a full movie out of Bart showing his weenie, would make it to the top 10 best movies in their magazine and arguably create another cuties scare.

The Simpsons is a television cartoon (primarily) for adults and should be classified as such.

Throughout history, The Simpsons has always been geared towards adults as opposed to children. Matt Groening himself had that intention in mind back in the early 90s. The target audience for the show was (since its infancy) ages 18 to 49 years and it successfully won its audience. Seasons 1 to 3 seem kid-friendly now (I agree) but it really wasn't until Season 4 when The Simpsons took the more adult/offensive/explicit end to things which I think is fuckin' awesome; it's the shit! I'd say the same thing about Family Guy (I like that show as much as The Simpsons; they're both equally good). Once the show hit its fourth season, Puritanical morality flew out the window! Obviously, any show on TV had to (and still does have to) obey the FCC and Fox's censorship policies, which made it difficult for The Simpsons' creators to get the adult content within the episodes to air. I for one do find television's censorship policy a bit strange and hypocritical. Of course, The Simpsons had sequences that were forced to be deleted during its original broadcast, but thanks to subsequent broadcasts and DVD, you can now watch all the episodes in their uncensored entirety! And thanks to the internet there is FAR less censorship, which is good! Now, I'm not saying that censorship is ENTIRELY bad. It's important to have SOME censorship in order to prevent the worst that could happen in our lives. Everything in moderation. No pun intended.

I for one have a problem with The Simpsons' young fans (children and underdeveloped teenagers). I mean, I think fandom among younger audiences should be accepted but discouraged. The reason I think it should be discouraged is because children and underdeveloped teenagers are not stable-minded enough to associate themselves with it. The franchise, but the show in particular, contains disgusting violence (especially in the Itchy and Scratchy segments and Treehouse Of Horror/Halloween episodes), sometimes callas jokes, borderline-pornographic sequences, sometimes disturbing sequences, illicit-drug use and cursing. Definitely NOT "family-friendly". Obviously, South Park is FAR worse in terms of its offensive/adult content, even Superjail or Drawn Together are in that category of being a bit extreme. But let's face it: The Simpsons is not for little kids or for those whose minds aren't mature enough. Nobody should be watching it or having anything to do with its fandom until they are of age.

I know I'm being a bit of a hypocrite here, but I started watching The Simpsons when I was 12, even though in retrospect I was "underage" or too young for it. I think I might have been exposed to it when I was young as 5. That's even worse! I was in Kindergarten for fuck's sake!

I hate it when people call The Simpsons a "family show" when it really isn't. It never was. Sure, there were and are kids and families that watched it and still do to this day, but it really wasn't/isn't meant for that audience. It was and is primarily intended for adults. I would say it's R-rated, although certainly not NC-17 like South Park, Superjail or Drawn Together! NC-17 is FAR worse than R! The Simpsons Seasons 4 and beyond make Seasons 1 to 3 of it look (almost) PG-rated.
