Not as consistently great as its predecessors (aside from 1, I guess) but still witty, well-written stuff overall. The tendency to try out new ideas is successful at times and less so at others. It's noteworthy that this was the last season the show could be considered so reliable week after week.

The last great season. However, in comparison to most of the other classic seasons, it doesn't quite hold up. It's better than Season 1, but 7,6,4 and 3 are better, and 2 and 5 probably are too. This season does contain one of my favourite episodes ever, though.

Last classic season but there are definitely signs of decline here. One of two classic seasons that has no A+s (the other is 4) from me.

to me, this is as close to a perfect season that the simpsons ever got

Plenty of amazing episodes here! A few average episodes lurk inside, but still one of my favourite seasons.
 
Treehouse Of Horror VII: A-
Pretty good first segment, good second segment, awesome third segment.
You Only Move Twice: A+
Awesome episode. Hank got too be one of the best one-time characters ever.
The Homer They Fall: C+
Meh, the jokes are okay but like Homer Goes To College it has too many things that forshadow the later seasons.
Burns Baby Burns: A+
Awesome episode. Again the one-time character got too be one of the best ever. Perhaps the most underrated episode of all time.
Bart After Dark: A-
Feels a bit absurd at times but its still a very funny episode and the musical number is one of the best ever.
A Millhouse Dividid: B+
The plot and emotion is great but it gets a little dull at times.
Lisas Date With Density: B
Again the plot is great but it gets a little dull at times.
Hurricane Neddy: A-
Awesome beginning, meh ending.
El Viaje: A-
Awesome animation and the episode is very funny as well.
The Springfield Files: A+
Hilarious X-files parody.
The Twisted World Of Marge Simpson: C+
Meh. Worst episode of season 8.

One of the best parodies/songs ever.
The Itchy And Scratchy And Poochie Show: A-
I dont care for Barts "you owe them" line mainly because it dosent really make any sense but the rest of the episode is very funny and has some awesome meta-humor.
Homers Phobia: A+
The ending where Homer loses his homophobia because John saved his life feels a bit cliched but the rest are pure gold.
Brother From Another Series: A+
Second best Sideshow Bob episode.
My Sister My Sitter: A-
I dont mind Bart in this episode as i can understand his behavior here considering he got his little sister babysitting him, he might go too far with his actions but i dont see how its that much worse than his usual actions.
Homer Vs The Eighteent Amendment: A
"To alcohol" is one of the best Homer lines ever.
Grade School Condentifial: B+
Great plot but it gets a little dull at times.
The Canine Mutiny: C+
Meh. Some very good stuff but its overall pretty dull espacially for the season.
The Old Man And The Lisa: B
Great plot but the episode feels a little dull at times.
In Marge We Trust: B-
On the other hand the sub-plot is classic, on the other hand the main-plot is pretty boring.
Homers Enemy: A+
Homer is dumber than ever before but here he is meant too be overly dumb in order to contrast grimes character plus it has some of the best dark humor on the show ever. (flame me if you want Jake)
The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase: A-
Underrated episode. All the shorts had some big laughs and were very funny.
The Secret War Of Lisa Simpson B+
Good plot but again feels a bit dull at times.

On the other hand it has some very weak episodes for the classic-era. On the other hand the stand-outs are among the best episodes of all time and the A+ episodes are almost as many as the previous two seasons.

The beginning of the end for The Simpsons.

The cracks begin to form as Oakley and Weinstein push the show to its creative limits. The result is a collection of ambitious and experimental episodes that are hit-and-miss, containing increasingly problematic elements simmering beneath the surface that ominously hint at the ensuing decline. With little left to say about the Simpsons themselves, the show focuses on its rich supporting cast more than ever. The Homer They Fall, A Milhouse Divided, Hurricane Neddy, In Marge We Trust, Grade School Confidential, Lisa’s Date with Density, The Old Man and the Lisa, and Brother from Another Series all delve deeper into the backstories and circumstances of various Springfieldians, giving viewers a greater understanding of who they are. Meanwhile, the meta Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show reflects on the longevity and mortality of the show, the disturbing Homer’s Enemy highlights the nihilistic absurdities of the show's universe and its characters through the eyes of a mundane outsider, The Springfield Files represents the first crossover event with another live-action show, and The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase postulates what a post-Simpsons future might look like.

Season eight marks the end of The Simpsons as a reliably excellent show from week to week. While there's a temptation to lament its decline hereafter, all good things come to an end. Few shows ever get beyond the pilot stage and fewer still have the privilege of running for five or more years. The Simpsons "delivered wall-to-wall laughs" for eight and nothing will diminish the magic of those first 178 episodes no matter how long the show endures.

Season 8 was phenomenal and my 3rd favorite overall. I don't see any major signs of decline here and if anything I think the experimental nature of many episodes lends to some of the best episodes in the series. The last of the golden age for The Simpsons.

Woah, some shockingly bad scores near the end. I can get why you might not like those episodes you gave less than 4 out of 10. but how on Earth can you justify giving them 1 or 2's when their miles better than any 21st Century episode that is universally rated a 1 or 2 out of 10?
 
The Canine Mutiny: Felt just like a bland Jean episode. No humor.

In Marge We Trust: Subplot was hilarious but main plot felt just like a bad Scully episode.

Homers Enemy: The beginning of Jerkass Homer.

I've never gotten what people mean when they say Homer's Enemy contains Jerkass Homer. He's not being a jerkass in that one, in fact there are older episodes where he acts a lot worse. He's being an oblivious idiot, not trying to be mean. He even tries to be Frank Grimes' friend, but can't understand why he finds him so annoying.

As for The Secret War Of Lisa Simpson... I'm lost. I felt bad for Lisa in that episode, at no point did I ever think she was obnoxious.

Jerkass Homer means two things to me. Him being on a stupid streak and him being a asshole. This time he was on a stupid streak.

As for Secret War Of Lisa Simpson. She was being on a moral crusade like her terrible episodes later on.
 
I think she had a good reason for her crusade this time. Sexism in the military is a very real thing even today, plus considering she went through pure hell there just for being a girl it was pretty easy for me to root for her. I think this is one of the more underrated season 8 episodes (not one of the funniest ones though granted). Bart and Lisa's sibling bond shines through nicely here, something which would become more and more of a rarity as the show went on.

I admit that part of a reason i don´t like Secret War is because i find it very boring but i still didn´t like that Lisa went on a moral crusade about sexism. I think the only time that worked was in Lisa The Vegatarian.
 
Understandable. At least we agree on My Sister, My Sitter, Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(Annoyed Grunt)cious and The Old Man And The Lisa, those ones get way too much derision. My Sister, My Sitter and The Old Man And The Lisa are two of my favorite season 8 outings. I don't love Simpsonscali, but it's a fun satire on musicals.

I never understood the Jerkass Bart complaint in My Sister My Sitter. For me that´s one of the last episodes where his character really shined. Also i made a mistake, i meant to give Secret War a 3/10 not a 1/10.
