Is Homer Greek?

On at least 2 counts Grnpa did'nt seem 2 know his heritage, like when he said "The old country," but he did'nt know wich one and when he said he traded a mule for his name. But in 1 ep Homer says "Im just passionet like all us greeks" and his name is "Homer"...so is he??
