what did you think of season 26 of the long-running show "the simpsons"? was it an IMPROVEMENT over the last?

It's been a big improvement over the last few seasons, IMO. It's only had two episodes I really didn't like (Musk and Big & Tall), and it's had enough emotional and comedic vitality to keep me interested. Some of the animation has been great (Marge's trip-out!), and I've remembered more of the plots in 26 than in 25.

It's actually making me look forward to season 27.

I haven't seen Mathlete's Feat yet so I can't comment on that, but I'd say its definately one of the better HD seasons, probably the best. And I think its a slight improvement over 25, which was also a solid HD season.

The great: Treehouse of Horror XXV, Simpsorama, Blazed and Confused, I Won't Be Home For Christmas, Bart's New Friend, Sky Police, The Kids Are All Fight

The bad: Clown in the Dumps, The Musk Who Fell To Earth and Let's Go Fly a Coot

The rest would range from mediocre to good.

I wouldn't call it a "huge" improvement over the last few seasons but it's definitely a start. While its one standout episode (I Won't Be Home For Christmas) is probably only on par (or even slightly not as good) as other HD standouts (Steal This Ep, HOFP, Maya Moe, Bob Next Door), the overall quality of the rest of the season probably makes it the best since 20.

It only had one episode that I gave a 5/5, which was Sky Police, though there were a couple 4/5s, like Bull-E and The Wreck of the Relationship. The only really bad episodes were Clown in the Dumps and Musk. I didn't like Let's Go Fly a Coot much either Most of the episodes were average and it was a pretty balanced season, quality-wise. 3/5

ive actually enjoyed it a lot. only episodes that were outright bad to me were walking big & tall, musk & lets go fly a coot.

Just realized I fully missed the last two. Going to watch Coot in a little bit, since everyone who hated the same eps I hated is saying it's so bad...

In all seriousness even though the season was bad it was a tad better then the last few, most of the eps weren't godawful and The Man Who Came to be Dinner was the first legitametly funny Jean ep imo in a very long time. So it's more like a 2/5

While it didn't have as many "piss/new low/horrifying" episodes and moments as the last few Seasons had, it was still pretty bad. The amount of episodes with disjointed plots (Peeping Mom, Mathlete's Feat, Simpsorama) and barely any focus (The Princess Guide, Walking Big and Tall) was even worse than last Season, and then there were just some downright bad episodes inbetween (Clown In the Dumps, The Musk Who Fell to Earth).

There was 2-3 episodes that I thought were pretty good though (I Won't Be Home For Christmas, The Man Who Came to Be Dinner, Sky Police), which is an episode or more than I could say about Season 24 or 25, so uhh...2/5 overall?

HD Standards: 4/5
TV Standards: 2.5/5
Simpsons Standards: 1/5

Typical HD season. Better than 22 and maybe 24, since those seasons had almost no standouts, but was on par with the other HD seasons and wasn't really an improvement over 25, which I considered to be pretty mediocre. Sure, it had some good stand-outs like Bart's New Friend and the Christmas Episode, but it had two pieces of shit ("Musk" and "Coot") and a LOT of mediocrity. Just another HD season for me. Not worse, but not really better either.

I think it's safe to say this has been the most ambitious season in the last several years. There was the "big" death episode, crossovers with Family Guy and Futurama, Al Jean returning as writer twice, The Man Who Came to Be Dinner with Mirkin and Silverman, and the Judd Apatow episode. And the most Selman eps we've ever had: The Wreck of the Relationship, Opposites A-Frack, Covercraft, and Sky Police. Most of it was in the first half of the season, though, which makes for a pretty good stretch of episodes in the first half, and a ton of mediocrity/outright awfulness in the second half. I guess it balances out to be among the better HD seasons. Rankings:

1. I Won't Be Home for Christmas
2. Bart's New Friend
3. Sky Police
4. The Man Who Came to Be Dinner
5. The Simpsons Guy
6. The Wreck of the Relationship
7. Covercraft

I think the end of Mathlete's Feat summed up the feeling I got from people who thought Season 26 an improvement:

"TO LOWER STANDARDS!"

I've only seen the Fracking episode and The Kids Are All Fight, which were both terrible IMO. I will eventually watch the rest, but those two aren't inspiring a lot of confidence. Also by the rest of the responses here, it seems like it was never much better.

While this season didin´t have as many crappy episodes as season 21-25 at the same time it didin´t have any real stand-out episodes the best episodes were only a enjoyable watch when there were three episodes last season that was actually great. I guess it´s a improvement over season 21-25 for being more on the average side but it was still medicore and most of the episodes were forgettable. I prefer season 13-16 to it by a lot and season 19 is also better by a fair bit.

Yet to see "The Kids Are All Fight", "Let's Go Fly a Coot" or "Mathlete's Feat", but I'd say this season has been about typical for the HD years: some good, watchable episodes ("Sky Police" was the obvious stand-out, but I also enjoyed "My Fare Lady" and "The Princess Guide"), some really horrible ones ("The Musk Who Fell to Earth", "Bull-E") and all the rest fall into generally bland mediocrity, distinguishable from each other but unremarkable, with the most positive thing you can say for them being that they never fall into actually being so bad as to be offensive.

Middle of the line for me.
I like how people say that Musk and stuff are terrible but seem to forget Brick Like Me, PayPal and the other shit from season 25. I think 26 has improved over 25 by a lot, with more 4/5s and 5/5s but its still not as good as, say, season 11, 12, 13 or 18.

But there was a lot of standouts, like the THOH and the Christmas episode.

Now that the season is over, looking back on it the things that most stand out was that this really was the season of the crossover - we had The Simpsons meeting characters from Futurama, Rick & Morty, and Family Guy (not a Simpsons season 26 episode, but it did air during this season). We also had a couple internal crossovers with THOH XXV's The Others parody featuring the Ullman era family and a full Kang and Kodos episode. Another major element to this season was questionable continuity, as both Simpsorama and The Man Who Came to be Dinner did some truly outlandish things with no real framing device to explain if it was canon or not. I really wasn't bothered by this, as we've seen THOH episodes and video games (The Simpsons Game, Hit & Run) that get really outlandish without any explanation.

Standouts: "Treehouse of Horror XXV", "Simpsorama", "Covercraft", "I Won't Be Home for Christmas", "My Fare Lady"

Good: "The Wreck of the Relationship", "Super Franchise Me", "Blazed and Confused", "The Man Who Came to Be Dinner" (controversial episode, but I liked it), "Bart's New Friend", "Walking Big & Tall", "The Princess Guide", "Sky Police", "Waiting for Duffman", "Bull-E", "Mathlete's Feat"

Middle of the road: "Opposites A-Frack", "Peeping Mom", "The Kids Are All Fight", "Let's Go Fly a Coot"

The disappointments: "Clown in the Dumps", "The Musk Who Fell to Earth" (though I liked that it set up later episodes and provided a season arc)

I enjoyed season 26. There were only two episodes I disliked, several good episodes, only a few middle of the road ones. My only complaint really is that the standouts were for their high concepts. "Covercraft" and "My Fare Lady" were my two favorite "traditional" episodes. I'd give the season a solid 4/5 because there really were a lot of episodes I enjoyed and ended up rewatching.

It was a good season, not sure if I would call it the best HD season but its a nominee. There have been some major dissapointments, like Clown in the Dumps and how they handled  Rabbi's  death. And The Musk Who Fell to Earth, which was just a whole episode of ass-kissing Elon Musk with a barebones story and devoid of humor.

The good episodes are a good watch, and this season has quite a lot of them. I'm really not sure which episode I like most, its either Simpsorama, I Won't Be Home for Christmas or Bart's New Friend. Or even Sky Police, that one is pretty close aswell. The one thing this season missed is some top-notch episodes that I rate a 10/10, previous season had Steal This Episode, Brick Like me and The War of Art which are incredible for its era. The highest rated episode in this season is only a 9/10 from me.

Aside from that there's also a lot of mediocrity, episodes that I don't find bad or good and are kinda forgettable. Like Opposites A-Frack, Waiting for Duffman and Mathlete's Feat.

R.I.P. this thread :(

Pretty much on the same page as you Kaine - I hate to rely on numbers to express my thoughts on a season, but season 26 did lack the 10/10 and 9/10 episodes. Still, it had a load of 8/10-7/10's while when combined made for an enjoyable season. But, compared to past seasons where I could easily point to "Homer the Father" or "The Book Job" or "Steal This Episode", season 26 didn't quite have such episodes. Still, I'd take a season full of 8/10s to a season like 23 where you had a few standouts and then several of some of the worst episodes the series has ever seen.

Didn't watch last nights ep yet, but it's maybe the best season since like 16 for me. Easily stands out as being better than the other HD seasons.

With the best episodes being Treehouse of Horror XXV, Covercraft, I Won't Be Home for Christmas, My Fare Lady, Super Franchise Me, The Man who came to be dinner, Barts New Friend, The princess guide, Sky Police & The kids are all fight. The only episodes I've considered to be not good at all were Musk, Walking Big & Tall, and Let's Fly a Coot.

Overall poor season. Probably a 3/5 or 2/5 overall. Episodes are just not enjoyable to me anymore, they are lacking in essentials like humor and a coherent plot.

The Man who Came To Be Dinner was quite disappointing to me, I thought it would be the best episode of the season but it was just meh (as the Rabbi would say). THOH was good this year!

Best Episode-
Bart's New Friend

Worst Episode-
Mathalete's Feats

EDIT: 500th post!!!

I think this was probably The Simpsons' worst season ever. It's the first season ever where there wasn't a single episode I'd call great or be compelled to recommend to anybody. Even seasons 11-12 had great episodes like "Behind the Laughter", "Trilogy of Error", "HOMR" etc. amidst horrible episodes like "Simpson Safari."

Season 26's good episodes in my opinion were "Treehouse of Horror 25", "Blazed and Confused", "My Fare Lady", "Sky Police", "Bull-E", "The Man Who Came to Be Dinner", "Super Franchise Me", "I Won't Be Home for Christmas" and "Simpsorama." And I would call these 'good' at best. If these were the worst episodes of the season, that would be okay, but there were too many abysmal ones this year that honestly rank just about as low as any in the show's history. "The Musk Who Fell to Earth", "Let's Go Fly a Coot" and "Mathlete's Feat" were all disjointed poorly-told stories with almost zero laughs. Those rank among the show's worst ever. Then you have a slew of just plain mediocre, poorly-constructed episodes with no lasting impression, like "Walking Big & Tall", "Waiting for Duffman", "Peeping Mom", "Clown in the Dumps", "Opposites A-Frack", "The Princess Guide" and "Covercraft".

Overall, the episodes were sometimes horrible, often forgettable/mediocre as hell, and at best okay/decent. No highlights. Even mediocre recent seasons had highlights. Last year we at least got "Steal This Episode", "The War of Art" and "Brick Like Me." The year before we had "The Day The Earth Stood Cool" and the quality double finale "Saga of Carl"/"Dangers on a Train". The year before that, "The Food Wife", "The Book Job", "Holidays of Future Passed", and "A Totally Fun Thing Bart Will Never Do Again." This season though, absolutely nothing to off-set the several bad episodes.

Woo Hoo!
