So another season has come to an end, thoughts?
Personally, it was SLIGHTLY better than Season 27. Though most of the episodes were bad, only 4 episodes were embarrasingly terrible (2.5/10 or lower, equivalent to an F-) while S27 had a much higher quantity. Most episodes got in the range of 4/10 (D-) which is bad, but not terrible. However, it was still awful. The show seems to have lost the capability to write a good story, pretty much every story was directionless, thin, or just plain dumb. The humor is also poor, virtually every episode this season had weak jokes. Some had good first acts but collapsed in the 2nd and 3rd. Only 4 episodes were good, only 7 rose above mediocre.
So overall, another terrible season, the show should really be put out of it's misery already.
RANKINGS:
1. Trust But Clarify (7.5/10)
2. Pork and Burns (7.5/10)
3. The Last Traction Hero (7.5/10)
4. Treehouse of Horror XXVII (7/10)
5. Havana Wild Weekend (6/10)
6. The Nightmare After Krustmas (5/10)
7. There Will Be Buds (5/10)
8. Monty Burn's Fleeing Circus (4/10)
9. The Cad And The Hat (4/10)
10. 22 For 30 (4/10)
11. Kamp Krustier (4/10)
12. The Caper Chase (4/10)
13. Dogtown (4/10)
14. A Father's Watch (3.5/10)
15. Moho House (3.5/10)
16. Friends And Family (3.5/10)
17. Fatzcarraldo (3/10)
18. The Town (2.5/10)
19. Dad Behavior (2/10)
20. Looking For Mr. Goodbart (2/10)
21. The Great Phatsby (1.5/10)

So what did you think of Season 28?

Miles worse than 27. That one had some decent eps (or great ones in HOH's case). But this was a stain from start to finish. The best it could do is, at most, mediocre (there will be buds). Objectively, it sucked, subjectively, it was the worst. Even the Scully era had some things to like and outside of one or two eps, even the older bad ones just felt like a waste of time at worst, they didn't make me feel miserable for having seen it like 28 did. Repeatedly.

It felt like one big "fuck you" and the feeling's mutual.

I agree it was worse than 27 (and probably 26 and 25 for that matter). WABF has been a fairly bad run of episodes so far. No real stand-out great ones like Halloween of Horror and Barthood. Too much Mr. Burns, too much Bart crying, and even a mediocre marriage crisis episode. "Caper Chase" was my least favorite and "The Town" was probably my favorite. I would rank it in the middle of the HD seasons, closer to the end (but still better than 22 & 24).

Most of this season was super forgettable, to the point where I can't even rank most of the episodes properly because they were just full of nothingness. But I still have a top 5, so...

5. A Father's Watch
4. The Nightmare Before Krustmas
3. The Great Phatsby
2. There Will Be Buds
1. 22 For 30.

Worst Episodes:
5. The Town (This seems like an ep I dislike at first, then appreciate at later viewings. But it's here for now. )
4. Moho House (Boring and predictable marriage crisis ep)
3. Kamp Krustier (Pointless sequel)
2. Havana Wild Weekend (Bad. Just bad.)
1. Caper Chase (Horrible satire)

Well, at least it was better than season 24 (which is still the worst season of the show).

Monty Burns’ Fleeing Circus – 3.5/10
Friends and Family – 4/10
The Town – 7/10
Treehouse of Horror XXVII – 4/10
Trust But Clarify – 3/10
There Will Be Buds – 9/10
Havana Wild Weekend – 2/10
Dad Behavior – 1/10
The Last Traction Hero – 7/10
The Nightmare After Krustmas – 2/10
Pork and Burns – 8/10
The Great Phatsby – 1/10
Fatzcarraldo – 5/10
The Cad and the Hat – 6.5/10
Kamp Krustier – 1/10
22 For 30 – 7.5/10
A Father’s Watch – 6/10
The Caper Chase – 5.5/10
Looking For Mr. Goodbart – 8.5/10
Moho House – 9/10
Dogtown – N/S

Having watched every episode except for the finale, I personally had no problem with this season! It had a pretty slow start but after that...Granted, I wouldn't call it a genuine classic or anything, but in my opinion, it was miles ahead of anything Season 27 had to offer. No stupid gimmicks (like the live Homer segments) and some mildly inventive stories to boot.

I can see the season coming together as a bit forgettable, but there are still a solid amount of episodes that stick out in my mind. Plus, it's no doubt that this has been the prettiest season, animation wise, by far. Take a look at the opening scenes of There Will Be Buds if you want to know what I'm talking about.

The writing was nothing spectacular, but there were a few great moments where I laughed for about a minute straight. Nothing amazing here, but just enough for me to classify is as pretty good. :)

Monty Burns' Flying Circus: 7/10
Friends and Family: 4/10
The Town: 8/10
Treehouse of Horror XXVII: 7/10
Trust but Clarify: 9/10
There Will Be Buds: 9.5/10
Havana Wild Weekend: 5/10
Dad Behavior: 4/10
The Last Traction Hero: 8/10
The Nightmare After Krustmas: 8.5/10
Pork and Burns: 7/10
The Great Phatsby: 2/10
Fatscarraldo: 7/10
The Cad and the Hat: 6/10
Kamp Krustier: 8/10
22 for 30: 9/10
A Father's Watch: 6/10
Caper a Chase: 5/10
Looking for Mr. GoodBart: 8.5/10
Moho House: 2/10
Dogtown: N/A

Boy, a whole lot of Burns this season.

Easily the worst season since 24.
The WABF production run is in contention for the worst one ever at its current pace.

Too much Burns.
Too much Kevin Michael Richardson.
Too much mediocre Steven Dean Moore.
Not enough music or contributions in general from Alf Clausen.
Still too much Tim Long despite him not writing a single episode.

Still worth it for There Will Be Buds which is a modern classic.
One other compliment I'll pass along is that I feel they've finally gotten over the pacing issues that plagued the first few seasons after switching to the 4-act structure.
Also, the animation direction from the likes of Matthew Nastuk, Rob Oliver, Matthew Faughnan and Chris Clements has been superlative of late.

I am optimistic about the XABF production run given the information that's been revealed thus far although I'm a little dismayed by the clear lack of effort to make the final run for the Gunsmoke record feel special.

Can't rank the all the episodes as I need a rewatch to refresh my memory. But There Will Be Buds, Trust But Clarify and Dogtown are the best ones.

Let's see ... two Mr. Burns episodes IN A ROW to start the season, a lot of episodes that felt boring, wacky, or repetitive, and for me, three of the final four episodes this season rated very low.

That said, there were some really good episodes (mainly ones where Matt Selman was showrunner):
-The Town
-There Will Be Buds
-The Great Phatsby
-Looking for Mr. Goodbart

But as much as I've been a fan of the show - I was first introduced to the series in 1997, when I was still a kid - the past 2 seasons have been a very steep downhill for me. Please end the series with dignity after its 30th season.

Meh we have had less Great episodes but also less terrible episodes then last season so it was "Alright" i guess.

Not as good as last season for sure but it had its gems which were The Town, There Will Be Buds, 22 For 30, A Fathers Watch and even Pork and Burns is on the edge of being great however its had its terrible ones which were Moho House, Dad Bahaviour and Dogtown.

This season was definitely a downgrade from Season 27(one of the better HD seasons imo). In my opinion, the season started out decent (probably because the majority of the episodes on the first half were from the S27 production line) but a surge of mediocre to pretty bad episodes came in the second half. Season 28 is also uneven. It has some pretty good episodes like There Will be Buds but there's also some pretty bad episodes like The Caper Chase. The season is at least better than S24 imo and has improved animation quality. It's definitely been an interesting ride this season.

Too much mediocre Steven Dean Moore..

The problem is, Al Jean and the other current execs of the show seem to think Steven Dean Moore is their top director or something.
The best episode for me was definitely "The Town." I also liked "There Will Be Buds," "A Father's Watch" and even "Looking for Mr. Goodbart." But the rest of it was your typical mediocre forgettable HD Simpsons, even the "Treehouse of Horror!"
My brother liked a lot of the episodes, even the bad ones. He especially likes episodes written by new, first-time or freelance writers, even though they are usually bad (with a few exceptions, like "The Town," where they hired a Massachusetts-native writer to try and make the episode as authentic as possible.)

I don't have an issue with using Kevin. I've enjoyed him when he's been given a substantial supporting role as he was in The Great Phatsby, American History X-cellent and Walking Big & Tall.

My primary pet peeve with him is that his involvement in OTHER episodes seems to extend to loud caricatures that stand out as "let's give Kevin some mic time" roles that contribute little if anything to the stories within the episodes being told. Anger Watkins is the preeminent recurring example of this phenomenon but not the only one. This is further compounded by his limited vocal range... I mean, Tress MacNeille has made a career out of staple window dressing characters in The Simpsons but at least most of them don't sound the same outside of her host of Lindsay Naegle dopplegangers.

I would like to see him established with some recurring characters that contribute to the Springfield pantheon in a meaningful fashion. Bring Jay G back. Make Hibbert's no-good brother-in-law from Tapped Out (Chester Dupree) a recurring role and have Kevin voice him. Give him a recurring role as a teacher at Springfield Elementary. Give us a reason to care about these characters instead of simply trotting Kevin out for annoying one-off characters that only serve to distract from the episode instead of enhancing it.

Yeah, they didn't in the 90s and 2000s, but nowadays many of her incidental character voices usually sound the same. Though this could be attributed to age; she may not be as versatile as she was back in the 90s. And I remember her using her Lindsey Naegle voice outside of the Simpsons quite a bit, such as Charlotte Pickles on "Rugrats," Mary Hartless on "Animaniacs," and Linda van Schoonhoven on "Futurama."
But yeah, Kevin Richardson does seem to have a bit more limited range. Not to mention you hear him in a lot of other shows lately (Warner Bros. Animation seems to be treating him as their new Mel Blanc, and casts him in nearly everything they do nowadays!) Though having him voice numerous one-off characters isn't surprising to me; Pamela Hayden does that quite a bit now as well, though I can also identify her voices rather easily too. But at least in Kevin's case, it's a bit better than giving all of them to Hank Azaria and Dan Castellaneta (including black guys.)

This was an incredibly average season. Only 5/5 goes to There Will Be Buds, and the worst episode was probably Moho House, although I'm not there yet on my rewatch, so that could change. Better than season 27, but worse than 26.

Had some interesting storylines. Obviously, it can't compete with the classics, but it's certainly an improvement over recent seasons.

Looking back at this season, especially now after season 29, it's an really averagely poor one. It has a whole lot of the usually typical bland, average episodes of the modern seasons, two of the worst HD episodes ('Dad Behavior' & 'The Caper Chase') & just a few above average episodes ('The Town', 'There Will Be Buds' & 'Pork And Burns'). I think even 27, while not outstanding, was much better as it had more above average to good episodes, including 'Halloween Of Horror'.

Season 27 & 29 are both easily superior to what Season 28 doled out. My opinion of it being the worst season since 24 remains true. The WABF episodes were not good. Thankfully the XABF run has rebounded to much higher standards - although I remain leery about the first chunk of Season 29.

Season 28 didn't have too much to offer, and even the very few episodes dubbed the best of the season were still a little dull in places.

Season 28 was honestly kinda shit. It was really inconsistent. Sure, there were some really good episodes like There Will Be Buds and a few decent episodes like Pork and Burns. But, the season was really bogged down by some really awful episodes such as The Caper Chase, Dad Behavior, The Cad and the Hat, and more. It didn't help that the rest of the episodes were mostly mediocre. A sizeable downgrade from season 27. Season 27 was far more consistent especially in its second half.

While I agree that 27 is better I think that 29 is definitely the best of the three most recent seasons, even with it's weak episodes (and to me, even it's worst episode, which would be 'Singin In The Lane', wasn't as bad as for example 'The Caper Chase'). An surprising step up in many cases due to the quality of several of it's above average (and in some cases really good) episode.

One of the big thing is that season 29 had a much stronger finish than 28. Moho House and Dogtown were two of the worst episodes of the season, and they were everyone's final impression of the season when it finished.

I find season 28 to be one of the weakest seasons of the show. There's nothing that stood out by much in terms of quality, the best episode it had is There Will Be Buds. And I liked The Town, The Great Phatsby, Pork and Burns and 22 for 30. Season 27 and 29 are both better with more outstanding episodes and less mediocrity. With all the Mr Burns episodes they had they could've tried to do a trilogy of him being evil or something.

Yeah, season 29 was a big improvement from seasons 28. It had a bunch of good episodes and far less awful episodes. Even Singin' in the Lane, the worst episode of season 29, isn't as bad as the abysmal The Caper Chase.

I don't know if consensus has improved since this thread, but I assume it hasn't. I'm honestly baffled. This season is a billion times better than all HD seasons before it. I mean, it's not even a competition. 28 beats their heads in. Not only does it have some of the best of the HD era, but only a few stand out as bad.
