vs

1. Great Big Pile of Leaves (might actually check this band out)
2. Joey Fatts (other song is okay, but Vince and Joey kill it here. Love the sparse production on it too)
3. Machinedrum (other song is meh)
4. Young Nudy (don't get the love for US Girls. One of Pierre's best beats.)
5. Danny L Harle (basically a finals matchup in round one. It's like UNC playing Duke in the round of 64)
6. Ogikubo Station (wimpy and gay)
7. Spice One (other song is worst of the round)
8. James Carr (damn another insane matchup. Gotta go with this one tho. Reminds me of my grandparents)

jestofunk (stellar vocal work)
innocents (love vince but track left me cold)
machinedrum (tha chops here jesus)
young nudy (pierre the goat)
curren$y (showdown winner material)
mc solaar (nifty different take on boom bap)
spice 1 (fun! other song is bad)
james carr (very pure, rural soul to this)

  1. o hi bias. indie ass band name jokes aside this actually does sound like autumn. a bit National lite but still very pleasant and subdued. JESTOFUNK is a house singer wailing over an eternally groovy beat - it's six minutes but most house music is so who really cares. I reckon JESTOFUNK is more ambitious and has a better shot of going deep into the showdown but still a shame to see one of the better bias tracks in recent memory go out in a tough round 1 match.
  2. jangly guitars yes please. the Innocents track sounds quite rough around the edges (dunno if it's a demo or purposely produced like this) but still nice and brisk. Vince brings fire as usual over a great icy beat. slight edge to Joey Fatts but another tough match.
  3. horn section. I nut. that simple. Machinedrum chops up the samples beyond recognition which is of course the correct way to chop samples, but at times it is a little overwhelming. still, the way the frantic rhythms give way to smooth overarching vocals is excellent. yet again, sad to see either of them go, but slight edge to Meiko.
  4. love the vocal work on US Girls, but much like the bias track in match 1, I don't think this is particularly ambitious enough to go deep into the showdown. the other track, well it's bouncy Pi'erre trap drums. hook that shit up to my veins.
  5. Freddie out here again inexplicably riding a chill near-vaporwave beat. might never get tired of Freddie just fading his way into the forefront. and then Danny Harle shows up guns blazing with a banger that's just too big to ignore. both of these could have easily crushed their own showdowns but here they are facing each other in round 1 ughh. legendary match but my heart says Danny Harle.
  6. hey it's boom bap. missed ya from the last showdown. foreign rap is still pretty impossible for me to get into but that beat is undeniably vintage. Ogikubo Station is cute and I wish I had more to say but that really does sum it up. another crushingly close one but my racism toward foreign languages has led me ever so slightly to Ogikubo Station
  7. in a regular ol' showdown round, Sunk Loto would probably stand a chance as a middle-of-the-road track. but in this serious contender for the best showdown round in recent memory, not even close. Spice One keeps up the 1B consistency with some damn tasty guitar licks.
  8. hahaha goddammit. yet another match where either could handily win its own showdown. James Carr destroys that earlier Al Green track with a healthy dose of comfort, and yet, I don't think I can bring myself to deny the Carl Carlton groove. truly painful match.

1- A Great Big Pile of Leaves v Jestofunk
Ambiversion is quite a pleasant affair, nice breezy tune, decent harmonies, cool chorus. A good summer song. Jestofunk seems ok, house influenced, but a bit monotonous and repetetive for my liking. Gonna give it to Ambiversion

2- The Innocents v Joey Fatts ft Vince Staples
I loved my post-punk shit, so naturally One Way Love delights. The second one has a cool tribal sound, everything else sends me to sleep though.

3- Meiko Nakahara v Machinedrum
Like the former very much, got a cool latin sound (yes i know the song is japanese) Machinedrum - very busy, nothing much happens. nahhh

4- U.S Girls v Young Nudy
OOh this is cool, love the underlying synths, great vocals, come nice hooks. The latter sounds very meh

5- Curren$y v Danny L Harle
1UL is so much better I can't really waste timeon this. Banger

6- Temps mort v Ogibuko Station
First song is Smoothhhh. Ogibuko is ok, nice bubblegum sound, agreeable sound. Fcuk this is close, but I think this latter song is growing on me.

7- Sunk Loto v Spice One
Cool, deftonesy vibe going on with Sunk Loto. Moody, atmospheric, little bit grungy and chill. Spice One is one of the better hip-hop efforts this round, a bit more alternative. Sunk Loto has the feels tho

8- James Carr v Carl Carlton
Sweet little bluesy number this first one, but one of my pleasures is post-disco. This Carl Carlton mixes dance and electro very well, not in love with it by any means, but a cool sound.

Match 7 was brutal, I really enjoyed both tracks and will be listening to more from both artists. Other favourites of the round include MC Solaar, US Girls, and James Carr.

Sorry for not sending out mentions sooner, I've had a busy couple of days. I will close the round in about two hours. If anyone has been planning on voting, there's still a little time. Mentions for participants and people who voted last time but haven't yet.

1. Shaquille O'Neal - Legal Money (Surprisingly close match tbh)
2. Dan Mason - Night Drive
3. Ducktails - Sedan Magic
4.Royaljag – Tea
5. Denise Lopez - Tell Me What It Is (The other track sounds like the kinda music Egg trys and fails to make. Also the other song is 10x better anyway)
6. St. Paul - Too Well
7. Susumu Hirasawa - Switched-On Lotus
8. Norman Brown - This Time Around

1. Shaquille O'Neal - Legal Money
2. Brass Alley - Pink Pills
3. Ducktails - Sedan Magic
4. Royaljag – Tea
5. Denise Lopez - Tell Me What It Is
6. St. Paul - Too Well
7. Susumu Hirasawa - Switched-On Lotus
8. Common - Book Of Life

1. Blu & Exile ft. Jimetta Rose - The Only One (love this)
2. Dan Mason - Night Drive (extremely chill. I dig it)
3. The Jerry Cans – Ukiuq
4. The Pharcyde - On the DL
5. Denise Lopez - Tell Me What It Is (literally the easiest choice)
6. Waxahatchee - Brother Bryan
7. Susumu Hirasawa - Switched-On Lotus (both are okay)
8. Common - Book Of Life

1. Blu & Exile ft. Jimetta Rose - "The Only One"
2. Brass Alley - "Pink Pills"
3. Ducktails - "Sedan Magic"
4. Royaljag – "Tea"
5. Denise Lopez - "Tell Me What It Is"
6. St. Paul - "Too Well"
7. Susumu Hirasawa - "Switched-On Lotus"
8. Norman Brown - "This Time Around"

1. Shaquille O'Neal - Legal Money

Both are about the same quality, 3.5/5 songs. Wouldn't mind if either passed. I'll vote for Shaq because I like the beat better, but I could easily change my vote.

2. Dan Mason - Night Drive

Dan Mason is chill, but it kinda goes in one ear and out of the other. The other song is a little unremarkable too, with a very dinky guitar tone. I guess I will go for Dan Mason, because it's something I could relisten to.

3. Ducktails - Sedan Magic

Ducktails is an okay song, I guess. Jerry Cans is kind of innovative sonically, but the composition isn't bringing much to the table. Gu

4. Royaljag – Tea

An OK rap song vs a fairly chill song. Yeah whatever, either could go here and I would be satisfied. I guess I will go with Tea.

5. Denise Lopez - Tell Me What It Is

Most obvious pick in history. Not much needs to be said except for the fact that the 9 minute song was a complete snooze and the other song good clean sugar fun.

6. St. Paul - Too Well

I guess Waxahatchee is a decent mood or whatever, but basslines like that give me a headache after a bit. But St. Paul has much cooler production and is way catchier. Another pretty easy pick.

7. Susumu Hirasawa - Switched-On Lotus

Both are decent and I wouldn't care if either passed but the loud shredding on Teenage Fanclub was a turnoff so Lotus gets the vote.

8. Norman Brown - This Time Around

Common sounded like he was about to fall asleep and the beat was nothing special. The chill elevator music gets the vote.
