The deepfake voices made with artificial intelligence could bring back characters that were removed from The Simpsons due to the real-life deaths of their voice actors such as Troy McClure, Lionel Hutz and Edna Krabappel. Creating deepfake voices of deceased voice actors such as Phil Hartman and Marcia Wallace could bring retired characters back.

They could. But it seems pretty disrespectful to replace their deceased actors with computers.
Read this other thread:

If disney wanted to bring back retired characters, they would of already since they have a large budget and a ton of people who can go and develop an AI Voice Program

It probably won't happen unless the show is still going on after the main voice actors have passed away. Or possibly in a reboot of some sort. Plus, Edna was officially killed off a while back, it wouldn't work unless they're rebooting the show from scratch.

Unless the AI would bring back Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz, which were retired due to Phil Hartman's death.

Yeah as others have pointed out that's not why they retired the characters, they retired them out of respect. If they wanted to replace the voice actor they would have done that already.

So can't they use deepfake voices of deceased voice actors?
I was about to say, "They can, but they almost certainly don't want to; there's a reason the characters were retired (and a reason Lunchlady Doris became Lunchlady Dora)" - but then I remembered the Robot Jones story.
Cartoon Network had an animated series called Whatever Happened to Robot Jones?, about a robot who masqueraded as a 10-year-old boy and attended elementary school to gather information on how human kids lived. The first few episodes had Robot Jones "voiced" by a computer synthesized voice. SAG/AFTRA threw a major fit; the union considered this "Frankenacting," and "another attempt to take jobs from human actors." Not only did the remaining episodes have to have an actor voice Robot Jones, but the earlier episodes had to be redubbed with the actor's voice as well.
In other words, I doubt that SAG/AFTRA would even let the producers use any AI voices.
