Yeah nice try Sunny, but Dave and I are NOT the same person. Even though me and Dave's posts are kinda somewhat similar in the way (except for one thing, I never said any one of the swear words here in NHC, ever), but still...

Why do I get the feeling that @Good Wile to Men might soon call me a rip-off artist and kick me in the shin?

Does it bother anyone else here when you're watching some interesting YouTube video essay on filmmaking/films/animation/etc. and they suddenly segue into plugging the sponsor ( in the same tone & language of the rest of the video). Like, I don't want to watch an discussion on filmmaking techniques to see the narrator switch to saying something like "....That's why I use Mubi to watch these films & many more on their extensive service....". I'm not liking how they try to trick viewers into watching those ads by presenting them as part of the video. Always tend to pull me right out of the experience.

If you need to have an ad, just put it at the start, don't try to bake them into the video content. It always makes you look bad and may actually, at worst, refute some of your points you've made in the video itself. Not recommended (and I've seen plenty of compaints about this, to be sure).

not officially, but there's some alternatives that detect a sponsorship segment in a vid and allow u to skip it

personally most of the vids i happen to see these they have timestamps that skip the ad, otherwise i just fast forward 1 minute and usually i skip them entirely so i don't really have a problem, but i can see how it's frustating (but also if it's a high profile YTber which probably has million of sponsorship opportunites and they pick something that manages to contradict their vid then imho it's on them:P)

Personally this video takes the cake for me. The story was already captivating, but then it just had to end with a sponsor that aligns with the theme of the video. Threw me off so bad too because there was already a 'This video was sponsored by ******' at the very beginning. It just felt like I was watching a video that was built for the sake of that ad. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, gotta put food on the table and such. Just kinda miffed bout it.

What inspired me to do this post was coming across this analysis video comparing the looks of older vs. newer movies and why the old ones look and feel more "real" etc. ("Why Movies Just Don't Feel "Real" Anymore") and by the end, he suddenly segued into shilling Mubi and it just felt jarringly out of place considering what he was talking of.

I think this following comment on video's comment thread on Reddit summed up the issue well:
You gotta love how this guy talks about authenticity and the tactile experience of film... and then closes the video by employing the exact same rhetoric to push an advertisement.

The philosophy of cinema tells us that the viewer can feel with their eyes, an embodied haptic experience of the film and the way we view the film also matters... that's why I use Mubi...

It's just ironic to me that a man who wants to, presumably, talk with authenticity about the deeper philosophy of film, seamlessly switches to pushing a product advertisement using the exact same language, the same mode of discourse.
Is it just me or is the board slowly getting a bit more cynical/bitter and/or pessimistic (to the point of some users having being put off)? I feel things changed across the last handful of months or so. I've kind of had enough of the growing pessimism all around the internet so I don't really care to see that seep into here as well, especially as I've always viewed this forum as comparatively better and usually a more inviting place.

Personally I'm more down on the people on here who actively detract from the conversations. While I try to be more positive myself, emphasis on try, I can appreciate some good cynicism, just explain why you're cynical about something, provoke a discussion about it so that people can agree or disagree with, don't just take a crap on what had been a cromulent thread cause that's how you get your kicks.

I'd also agree with @MudSlabs but EVIL, I might be relative newcomer on here but occasionally I do read the older posts and that's not a board I'd have even have signed up to, let alone stuck around for awhile now.

I'm definitely looking into it a bit much and it's not that bad (and some cynicism can be good), but I have seen several users voicing their concerns (like, I saw some discussions last week, both in threads and on user profiles with some not feeling all that comfortable around these forums, especially with how some other users have been taking things a bit too far), but there definitely is a bit more snark & dickishness going around here and there (and even some outright fights, which just made me shake my head). And yeah, those derailing discussions by actively trying to detract from them to be jerks or just mean is definitely an issue that doesn't make things any easier.

But, as said, things comes and goes and it all depends on the users being around, but right now there is a bit of an unease or unrest, it seems (in some places of the forum, not everywhere of course).

I'm used to it at this point, has seeped into pretty much every fandom I know nowadays. Loud house, Sonic, Fallout, etc...
You made a typo in the latest R&R thread

    It's actually episode 2, not episode 8
    CousinMerl
    CousinMerl
Note taken (even though I've already corrected it), but I would advise anyone against pointing out errors to the thread makers too quickly after the R&R threads been posted as it might very well be a work-in-progress for the first five, six something minutes.
Still working on that list for the NHC Top100 Episodes 2025 thread. Gonna cut it close this time.

It also made me a bit curious: Do you guys who posted early on have a full list ready or do you just construct a list for the thread?

    @Matty, I tried. I really really tried.

@CousinMerl that was me for like the past two weeks binging 9 seasons of the show to make sure I didn’t forget one of my tops. There’s just legitimately too many good episodes to consider and I was constantly bumping episodes off and adding episodes even until now.
    CousinMerl
    CousinMerl
@kupomog, I can honestly relate to that. While I've not been binging any episodes, I really had a problem with there being too many good episode to consider. So when I wasn't bumping any off the list, I was constantly remembering episodes I wanted on there so I had to make room.

I never really liked making numbered top lists and this really shows why.
Only recently learned OSS is gone from the forums as well (due to lashing out in the thread regarding the new rules). Jackomon, Meko & now OSS... Feels like we're losing those more or less prominent users that have been memorable, which is a shame. But I guess such things happen.
    Meg!
    Meg!
I’m still not one hundred percent what Meko did to “lose respect”
    CousinMerl
    CousinMerl
@SunnyHorizon_TheFox, I was certainly not forgetting Jackomon lashing out on you with death threats (and I wouldn't forgive him either if it was me being the victim, but I still completely understand your apprehension), but I was actually not talking about forgiving him for that or the like, but was rather referring to that I miss the Jackomon from before that (when he didn't attack others and was a very active and usually pleasant user to interact with; I did appreciate a plentiful of the threads he tended to create, for one thing).

@Meg!, Meko said she wanted to distance her from the fandom for personal reasons (feeling it was better at the moment as I think she was also struggling with mental health issues) so she asked for a leave (and a ban), which was after acting snippy toward other users more recently, I think.

Yeah I feel like we're losing a lot of notable users recently which is a real shame and OSS was always really nice to me (he's one of those that really stuck up for me when I was having trouble when I came back here so I won't forget that! :aww:) so he'll definitely be missed.
Lol I like your new PFP what episode is that from The Sash? I just started watching the show last month and I remember that moment
    CousinMerl
    CousinMerl
Yeah, it's from that one, I recall. Funny stuff. Really miss the show.
I do miss Meko/Xmas Will Last All Year! being around (even though she behaved oddly recently & said some bad things) but I understand why she wanted to leave as clearly she wasn't doing so well. Can't believe both Jackomon and Meko, both very active users, are gone now within just a few months of time.
    CousinMerl
    CousinMerl
@BloodySimpsonChibi, Meko apparently was behaving oddly and was being short with other users & wanted to distance herself from the community, asking to be banned. And Venomrabbit is still around, but has sadly stopped posting so I guess not doing so well either :(

And I didn't realize someone else had a wacky Christmas username before they left/got banned.

Not to bring up about Jackomon again this time, but he did absolutely lose his mind almost 4 months ago the last time he was ever active (heard he already gotten better not long after that) due to what he did. I don't know, it's already best that we move on from what happened nearly four months ago
    CousinMerl
    CousinMerl
Yes, I haven't forgotten about his breakdown, but I was more thinking about before that when he was a lot better and essentially kept much of Animated Discussion and arguably part of Media Discussion going with his enthusiasm and threads.

Oh, I see the vast majority of all those reactions are from Homerfan1998 having retroactively been thumbing up all my Family Guy reviews in the R&R thread starting from the beginning. I figured it must've been something like that.

"I sell peace of mind for a dollar an hour.... Two dollars after 9pm"

That's arguably one of my favorite underappreciated Lisa episodes! Best part of it is how much it definitely shows her inner strength and will, even when past the point of physical and psychological break.

Ah yeah definitely one of my favourites too and you described its appeal perfectly! :lisa:

Plus that quote's really funny.
You know, I've been thinking on the influx of Brian Griffin fans on the board and honestly, part of my mind seem convinced that at least two of them (@Brian Griffin and @clenchlord) might in fact be the same user o_O
The downside of not logging in much on here these days. Belated happy birthday old pal ! Hope you had a great one.
