Burger King promotion

The promotion hasn't started yet and the website on this poster, www.simpsonizeme.com, hasn't opened yet but BK should start promoting the movie soon.
We don't have BK in France (only one in Paris I think) but I thought you might be interested as nobody talked about it yet.

Wow. I thought this would happen soon enough. Shame that the Burger King next to my Local Cinema has just been replaced by a Subway...

Am I the only one that finds it depressing when a subversive, intelligent, anti-authouritarian, satirical cartoon like the Simpsons is promoted by a big company like Burger King? It just goes against everything the Simpsons are about.

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One of them is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere.Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville? I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what we called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt-which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. "Gimme five bees for a quarter,"you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah. The important thing was I had an onion tied to my belt-which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. All you could get was those big yellow ones....

They got to make money some how...but I do agree. When shows like The Simpsons or South Park attach themselves to big coporations it makes you wince with disgust.

I agree, because the majority of "average" people recognize the Simpsons as one-dimensional cartoon characters with lame catchphrases who are used to promote various products and catch the eye with their bold, yellow, spikey haired brood. Nonetheless, I will be unable to resist buying the toys.

I'm not too keen on promotional tie ins such as this unless they yield awesome collectables. I'm a bit disappointed it's Burger King though, their food makes me sick.

Same paradox as The Simpsons being broadcast on Fox I guess.

I find Burger King to me acceptable; it's McDonald's that makes me sick.

... Note to self, start going over to Burger King. I still want these collectables.

I have nothing against Burger King personally. In retrospect, I think it was the onion rings . . .

I'd rather it be Burger King than any other. They have the best marketing campaign out of all the franchises, so more power to them...

(and they've always promoted Fox movies, from Star Wars to Fantastic Four)...

You can just ask for the toy. They'll sell it to you.

Hopefully. In the past they've been really pissy about selling the toys directly.

i don't feel right about just asking them if i could buy one of the simpson movie toys, dr. strangelove. i really do think that you have to buy a big kids meal to actually get a toy. but i don't want to waste my money on a burger AND a toy, because i'll just be throwing the burger away in the first place.

It can be kind of embarrasing, but a kid's meal is, what, 3, 4 bucks and where I live they'll give you the toy for 1 to 2 dollars, depending on who's at the register. One time I got one for free.

What about the fact that it's owned by a big company?

its even more embarrasing to order a happy meal when you re a teenager than asking to buy the toy.

Heres the breakdown on fastfood franchises and their kids meal toy policies

McD's will almost always demand you buy the kids meal, and sometimes let you buy it separately. The corporate structure never ever handed down an official ruling on the subject, so its totally up to who ever's cool behind the counter.

BK is the coolest of the big 3, they Always knew lots of folks want to buy only the collectible toy, and will ring it up as an item, no fuss!

Wendy's from my experience is the toughest on kids meal toys. Every location I can think of, and others I've heard of, will do their Damnedest to keep the toy from you. One place wouldn't even sell the kids meal to my friend because he wasn't a kid, suspecting he was buying it just for the Collectible. Another manager tried belittling a friend of ours for asking to get the toy alone. I honestly believe Wendy's has official policies to be tough on this matter.

Thank god Wendy's doesn't land many decent media merchandise contracts!

In October 2001 Burger King had The Simpsons Halloween toys.. I used to ask if I could get one with a value meal..not the kids meal and they just add it on as an additonal item and I collected all of those figures.

I know what some mean by finding it a little sad when something becomes so heavilly endorsed and well, commercialized, but thats not really a fault of the show. Almost nothing out there can get away without even some shameless self promotion, its how media works right now and probably will continue to work for some time to come. I think it can definitely get to tasteless realms when done too much or in a certain way, but still its a bit naive to think that promotion of any sort brings down the quality of something.

Besides, the show's been doing promotion like this for a very, very long time. Since the second season even. Its nothing new. And I can't help but find it strangely in character for the show too. While this show points out the "funny" things about commercialism and selling out, it doesn't exactly demonize it either. I could argue against the idea that the show is completely "anti-authouritarian" since its take on so called "corruption" and selling out has always been double sided. You can kinda take example of that sort of mentality from many of the characters including Homer, Burns, Wiggum etc. One can certainly validly critisize when one of them plays dirty to get by in life, but then you have to think there's also a valid reason for it too. The world's not black and white like Lisa'd like to think it is.

I see the show promoting itself in a similar way, its kind of a necessary evil. Granted I think the promotion is getting kinda heavy but you know Fox. Even the show itself makes fun of its own studio, but fact is is that studio has allowed the show to exist for almost two decades now.

I guess I cna't really complain about this kind of thing when the Simpsons are owned by Fox. Seeing as they were part of a huge corporation, they never had to deal with the problem of "selling out" as they were never really in to begin with. I suppose the fact they have been a mass money-making machine from the start makes it more admirable that they've been able to be so subversive by biting the hand that feeds them. And it's not like they're not aware of the situation either, considering all those self-referential jokes about mass marketing, such as the Butterfingers swipe in Sweets and Sour Marge and Bart saying "How could you, Krusty? I would never lend my name to an inferior product".
