What is a Simpsons Cel ?
A Simpsons cel is a sheet of clear plastic celluloid containing a hand painted image of a character which has been used to create a scene in the production of the television show The Simpsons.
The character images found on a Simpsons cel were originally created by xerographing an outline of a Simpsons character onto the front side of a celluloid sheet and then hand painted with color on the reverse side to eliminate viewable brushstrokes. The end result is an unbelievably rich and solid character image.
Each original Simpsons cel used in production was placed over a background image to create a cel set-up and photographed in succession to show movement on screen. These cel set-ups each represent a degree of motion to the characters. When individually photographed and projected in rapid succession, the images in the cel set-up appear to move, thus making the characters come to life.
Cel animation was used in the production of The Simpsons from season 1 (1989) through season 13 (2002).
